Why is celebrating Winter Solstice important?

The solstices and equinoxes are the heartbeat of our planet, reminding us that we are part of a greater whole. Without the rhythm of the sun, the breath of the trees, and the lunar tides, what would we be? Reflecting on our endless connection with nature is both beautiful and essential.

These reflections and rituals marking the transition between seasons have been carried out on all continents since the beginning of human history. At Damanhur, we consider the equinoxes and solstices to be particularly sacred times of the year.

How do we celebrate Solstices?

We come together to celebrate these important events inside large stone circles. During the days of the ritual, a fire is lit to represent the sun and another symbolizes the moon. We offer herbs to the fires, meditate, sing, recite mantras and prayers and we spend time in community, reflecting on our growth.

You can celebrate with us…

…and not only in Damanhur in Italy, but also—in NorwayCroatia, Colorado, Japanand Australia—where it will be summer solstice. You can click on any of the countries to see where they are located so that you can connect with them and join the celebration if it’s near your home.

These are joyful occasions, and we love to have guests and friends joining the celebration. You can participate in the ritual circle in Damanhur Italy by registering at the Damanhur Welcome Center.

Why is it important to celebrate Solstices and Equinoxes?

Our lives are deeply intertwined with nature’s rhythms; when we disconnect from this heartbeat, we risk believing that our existence depends solely on technology and convenience. So let’s celebrate nature!

What di Falco say about Solstices?

Celebrate the Winter Solstice from Home

If you’re unable to attend in person, there are many meaningful ways to celebrate from home:

  1. Create a Sacred Space: Gather natural elements like evergreen branches, candles, symbols of light and honor this turning point in your way. Here is a link to one of Falco’s letters talking about the importance of creating sacred spaces.
  2. Host a Winter Feast: Prepare a meal with seasonal ingredients and invite friends and family to share in the joy of togetherness. Celebrating with food, and we acknowledge the fact that we are in Italy, is always a good idea. 🙂
  3. Light a Fire: If you have a fireplace or fire pit, gather around it for storytelling or reflection. Let it symbolize warmth and hope during these darker days.
  4. Mindful Nature Walk: Spend time outdoors to connect with nature, and especially with trees. Listen to the sounds around you and reflect on your intentions for the coming year.
Interesting note: Falco used to say that trees love when you reflect on the divine when you are in their company. 🙂

As we embrace this season of darkness, let us also welcome the return of light with open hearts.

Happy Solstice!
