The divine force of the month of September is Rod, divinity of the Slavic peoples, whose worship had lasted until the Christianization of Central Europe. Rod continues to be an important presence in the consciousness of the descendants of the ancient Slavs, like a distant ancestor, an ancestor whose memory has been lost over the centuries, and precisely for this reason emanates a special appeal.
In Slavic mythology, Rod is the creator of the universe and all other forms. Before him, there was nothing. In a moment that he determines, he decides to conceive and generate himself. Then, little by little, from his own body, he creates nature and its phenomena: from his face, the sun is born; from his chest, the moon is born; from his eyes, the stars are born, and so on.
He then creates all the beings who inhabit the worlds. He separates good from evil, truth from falsehood, and he creates alternations: light/dark, day/night, death/life.
Everything that exists comes from him, even the other divinities of the Slavic tradition, which is polytheist but recognizes the presence of a First God.
Rod is often accompanied by the supreme mother goddess, Rodzanicy, represented in her three aspects that interweave the destiny of humanity, the Rodzanicy, as attested to in the expression Rod – Rodzanicy (“God and the Goddess”). She is also known as simply the “Goddess,” and all the minor goddesses are manifestations of her.
When they feel that their work of creation has been completed, the primordial couple Rod – Rodzanicy came to a standstill. They become a sort of universal principle, the One Law that regulates the universe. They are no longer an entity, but they embody the ultimate meaning of everything that exists: whatever one observes, whatever divinity one venerates, it is always Rodzanicy who is referred to!
The couple continues to exist without existing. Now that they have carried out their task, they no longer ask to be remembered, and they are no longer interested in the events of mortals because now it is the task of others: others who have been created by the divinities for this purpose exactly.
Perhaps, even more than with creation, Rod – Rodzanicy demonstrate their divine nature when they leave their beings free to self-determine, to make mistakes and to grow. They do not stop existing, but they play another role, one that is more useful for the purpose of their own creation.
Their example teaches us that dignity and happiness come from performing one’s own task as best as one can, and then leaving space for others, because life always belongs to those who will come after us. Rod – Rodzanicy teaches us to have respect for what we have created.
What is the point of giving life to mortal beings, creating marvelous worlds, and generating new Gods, if you do not let them be free to have their own experiences?
It is not easy to find the same spirit as that of Rod – Rodzanicy, manifested in human experience. Today, for those who have power, for those who are successful, for those who have responsibilities, it is often difficult to accept the idea of taking a step down. Rod – Rodzanicy have a lot to teach all of them: understanding when their task is completed and when it is time to let new and younger forces express themselves, offering them their own experience. Above all, Rod – Rodzanicy can teach us how noble and enriching this is, because it means knowing how to follow the indications of time and life, which teach us that every phase is transitory and every transformation offers new opportunities to get to know oneself, to grow, and to accept oneself.
At the same time, the example of Rod – Rodzanicy invites us to consider how important it is to renew ourselves, to turn a new page every day, honoring what came before us and valuing that which can bring new ideas and stimuli.
With his serene face, Rod observes us through the transparent water. Among the reflections of that water, perhaps you can find the reflection of your face.
