The guest in this episode is Daniel Wesley Whetung. At the age of three his parents brought him to “Old Bob”, the shaman of their tribe, and entrusted Dan totally to him. In those years, the practice of shamanism was illegal in Canada, so young Dan also went to Western schools.
In order to be initiated and get the permission to become a shaman, Dan was ordered by his Elders to walk into a bush carrying only an ax, a knife and what was necessary to light a fire. He was to remain in the forest until three things occurred: he had to dream the same Spirit three times, then he had to have three visions of that same Spirit, and finally he had to meet It.
Dan was full of enthusiasm and he figured all that would take him less than 10 days. He ended up spending 18 long, challenging, lonely and cold months in the forest. This is how he gained permission to practice the White Swan Medicine. He had learned to become as flexible as a swan’s neck.
Dan’s shamanic name is “NIBI DIGH” (pronounced NEEBEE DI), which means “dog of the water”. Without water there is no life, and the dog is the closest companion of the human being.
Dan is one of the few shamans to have completed all the Rites and Initiation required in his tradition to connect to the Spirits of Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth. In 1982, in the Canadian province of British Columbia, Dan established the “Rainbow Lodge” and created the Rainbow Dance, to share his teachings and the wisdom of his Ancestors with people of all colors and cultures.
